National Indigenous History Month – June

June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada. This month recognizes and honours the histories, cultures, languages, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples across the country.

At Aboriginal Sport and Recreation Circle NL (ASRCNL), we acknowledge this month as an important opportunity to reflect on the role of sport, recreation, and wellness in supporting Indigenous communities. Sport and recreation are powerful tools for building connection, strengthening community, and promoting physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing.

Why This Month Matters to ASRCNL

ASRCNL works alongside Indigenous communities across Newfoundland and Labrador to support access to sport, recreation, and wellness opportunities.

We recognize that Indigenous communities continue to experience barriers to participation in sport and recreation, including geographic isolation, limited resources, and the ongoing impacts of colonization and systemic inequities.

This month is an opportunity to:

  • recognize the strength and resilience of Indigenous athletes, youth, and communities

  • support culturally safe and inclusive sport and recreation opportunities

  • highlight the importance of community-led programming

  • reflect on how we can continue to improve access and equity across NL

These efforts align with our ongoing commitment to reconciliation through meaningful action and partnership.

ASRCNL remains committed to supporting Indigenous sport and recreation across Newfoundland and Labrador. We will continue working in partnership with communities to strengthen access, inclusion, and culturally safe opportunities for all.

Throughout June, we encourage reflection, learning, and continued action toward reconciliation through sport, recreation, and community connection.

June 21 – National Indigenous Peoples Day

June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day, a day recognized across Canada to celebrate the traditions, cultures, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.

This date is also the summer solstice, which holds deep cultural and spiritual significance for many Indigenous Peoples. It is a time of celebration, renewal, and connection to culture, language, and land.
